Life's Ironic Little Twists

Sometimes life just throws things at you to make you laugh. :)

In my last post I told you of my careless sewing mishap where I ran the machine several times through my finger. I then boasted that I was much older and wiser now, so I am much more careful. Which is true....for the most part. I am EXTREMELY careful around my sewing machine, I always make sure the machine is off when I thread it and my foot is always far away from the foot pedal when I need to get close to the needle. I haven't even come close to making that same mistake twice. However...my carelessness got the best of me with my rotary cutter. Yes, last night I was cutting out rectangles for a skirt I'm making, and I stupidly got my finger in the way of the blade. It took me a second to realize what was happening, so I have a very deep cut on the tip of my finger. Ironically, this injury hurt A LOT more than running the sewing machine through my finger. Guess I have some more learning to do!

(Recreation of the incident. I'm in awe of my stupidity.)

And, here is the the skirt that resulted from said injury. (From Altered Cloth) I think it turned out a little too poofy (I think cut out the pieces for a size too big and ended up with way too many ruffles) but I really like the way it turned out. I got the material from a remnants basket at Joanns so I didn't have enough for a knee length skirt, so I had to add the extra black fabric to the top to make it long enough.

I wore it to church today. :) There's something about wearing an article of clothing that you made yourself that is so rewarding! I really want to make more, I have so many patterns for cute skirts but I haven't done any yet. I blame it on my pattern phobia which I hope I will someday overcome! This was was easy, only rectangles!

Ok...so I've been keeping things from you.

There was no new LOST tonight. This deeply saddens me. My whole week is messed up! I have nothing to contemplate, nothing to talk about....I'm so LOST. (Haha! :D) Hopefully I can make it until next week...it will prepare me for when LOST actually ends. :(

Now...I feel like I've been keeping things from blogland, acting like my newfound hobby is my first experience with sewing. It's not. Let me tell you a little story.

My Mom is an amazing seamstress. She sewed all of my (and my sibling's) Halloween costumes as long as I can remember and she always sewed other cool things for us growing up. In 8th grade, I decided to take a sewing class in hopes that I inherited my Mom's ability. I didn't. Halfway through the year I carelessly sewed right through one of my fingers, just barely missing the bone. Totally freaked me out. Though it really didn't hurt as badly as you think it would, I never wanted to get near a sewing machine again. To top it all off...I sucked. I sucked big time. My projects were horrendous and I got sew (haha!) frustrated that I basically just gave up. I sewed a few things in that time but I never really got back into it. Until now that is! I don't really know what sparked it, but I'm happy to run with it! Besides, I think it will be a good skill to have in the future.

So...there's the truth. I'm not a real newbie. I like to think of myself as "born again." Phew, I feel so better now that that's out in the open! ;)

On a happier note, I am much more capable now that I am older and wiser. :) I just finished this hot/cold bag from Make it and Love it. I love the fabric, it's so springy and fresh!

Ahhhhh. :)

Zippers

I've kinda been on a sewing hiatus because of those seemingly simple little contraptions. I am making some things that require zippers, but I am so frustrated with them! All the pinning, the irritating sewing, the stupid zipper foot, needless to say my first zipper experiences weren't great ones. :) But, I have made my peace (sorta) and have started sewing again! Huzzah!

Substituting

I just finished a long term sub job. It was two weeks long, and I actually got to plan and teach real lessons, it was ALMOST like I had my own classroom. I've noticed that I like teaching so much better now that I get paid for it. Is that bad? I sometimes feel bad, shouldn't I just enjoy teaching for the love of teaching? I guess I'm just human right? :P

Pros of Substituting:
1. Money
2. Usually really easy days
3. Don't have to stay late or some early
4. If it's a horrible class, you don't have to go back

Cons of Substituting:
1. Awful pay
2. Kids don't respect you
3. You have to follow someone else's rules
4. You never know when you're going to work, it could be weeks before another job

All in all though, I've enjoyed. it. :) Hopefully I can get a full time teaching job sometime soon.
